For the 2016 model year, the American public could only get the Mercedes-AMG GT S, also known as the sexier and more powerful sibling of the GT. For 2017, Mercedes-Benz adds the entry-level GT to the lineup.
The question is, what do you get for twenty grand less ($112,125 versus $132,125)? For starters, the 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT differs from the GT S when it comes down to the seats. In the GT, the standard seats are wrapped in MB-Tex. That’s the fancy way of saying that customers get vinyl seats that look and feel a lot like real leather. On the upside, MB-Tex is easier to clean and less vulnerable to sun damage or cracking.

Just like the GT S, the 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT gets a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 under its hood, pushing 456 horsepower and 443 lb-ft instead of 503 horsepower and 479 lb-ft in the GT S. The difference in performance is even more dramatic when you compare it to the awe-inspiring Mercedes-AMG GT R, which has 577 horsepower and 516 lb-ft. Speaking of which, the #BeastOfTheGreenHell arrives in the United States of God Bless America in the summer of 2017.

On the visual front, the 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT boasts silver brake calipers. Other differences between it and its more powerful brother include the lack of Race mode for the AMG Dynamic Select system. Furthermore, don’t get Adaptive Exhaust or AMG Adaptive Suspension. Still, the GT is just about 70 pounds lighter than the GT S. Every little bit counts, you know, especially in a game of Top Trumps.

Be it the GT or the GT S, the 2017 model year adds an option some people were waiting for quite some time now. That option is the so-called AMG Aerodynamic package. In plain English, you get a fixed rear spoiler instead of an active spoiler. These said, if you’re in the market for a 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT or a 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT S, both are slated to arrive in dealerships across the United States late this summer.
