With the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro's normal versions, if we can call the SS that, now among us, it's time to look ahead at the sixth-gen Camaro incarnations that are currently in the making.
While we've spied the upcoming ZL1 on multiple occasions, in both Coupe and Convertible trim, a mysterious prototype was spotted earlier this week.
The Camaro test vehicle, which was caught on camera by a Camaro6 forum member, was enjoying the obvious test miles, being driven in San Diego.
The most likely scenario is that we are dealing with the 1LE handling package here, but certainty is not our friend on this occasion.
The prototype seen here seems to sport larger brakes, a front splitter, as well as a rear blade instead of the wing we're used to. Also, the ride height on this car might be lower.
One thing's for sure - this isn't your Ground Effects Package-fitted 2016 Camaro SS.
Those of you who are not familiar with the effects the 1LE track-savvy package had on the fifth-generation Camaro should know this managed to do quite a lot in the handling department.
For instance, a 5th Gen 1LE could go around the Virginiar International Raceway 8 seconds quicker than the SS it was based on.
The package consisted of 20-inch rims and 2nd generation Goodyear Eagle Supercar tires borrowed from the Camaro ZL1, heftier monotube shock absorbers, a larger front anti-roll bar, a front strut tower brace, as well as a few aero bits and custom interior goodies. Being sold for $3,500, this offered smile-inducing value for money.
Sure, the 2016 SS already comes with nimble handling, while the fuel pump of the LT1 engine no longer needs an upgrade such as the one included in the previous 1LE package, but there's always room for improvement. Guess we'll just have to wait and see what the bow tie engineers are cooking.
