When Audi first introduced the S5 performance coupe back in 2007, the world wasn't quite so obsessed with power. Designed to compete against BMW's 335Ci and Mercedes CLK 500, the car had a relaxed 4.2-liter FSI V8 making 354 hp at 7,000rpm.
A few years later, the Germans replaced it with a downsized 3-liter V6 that had a supercharger attached. For the European market, the output went down to 333 hp. But now, an all-new S5 Coupe has been revealed, and it too makes 354 hp, just like the original, only it's coming from a turbocharged engine.
Like the BMW M2, the S5 has only one turbo because Audi is saving the twin-turbo tech for the big boys like the RS4 and RS5. In the context of the quad-turbo BMW 750d and the electric supercharger of the SQ7, this sportscar seems a bit rudimentary.
But a 0 to 100 km/h time of 4.7 seconds is nothing to laugh at. Like the new S4 sedan and wagon, this coupe is going to be available with a quattro GmbH rear-mounted differential. However, at least for Europe, there's only one transmission choice: the automatic.
Despite offering 21 hp more and a respectable 500 Nm of torque, the turbocharged engine is also said to be quite efficient and consumes just 7.3 liters of fuel per 100 km (32.2 US mpg).
As far as the styling is concerned, the S5 doesn't differ much from the regular A5. It's got a slightly lower suspension, bigger wheels, and quad exhaust. However, the updates made to the bumper are very subtle. The easiest way to tell these two cars apart is by looking at the wide line that connects the bumper's air intakes on the S5.
Rather pleasingly, the headlights look nothing like those of the A4. The interior looks like a more driver-centric version of the sedan. Of course, he 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit system is a major feature, but you also have a normal screen in the middle of the dash, unlike on the TT. The gear shifter is just as chunky as on the Q7, and its top surface gives you support while using the MMI knob.
