Audi is going to discontinue the 3-door version of the A3, which is a little sad, considering that's how the model was originally born into this world. A lot of things happened in these past three generations, cementing the reputation of the A3 as so much more than a re-bodied VW Golf.
We're currently past the half-way mark of the current generation's life cycle, which means we might say goodbye to the 3-door in about two years. There's no advantage to having two fewer doors on your hatchback, yet a few hardcore fans still buy it, even spending over €40,000 like this fellow.

Audi Forum Neckarsulm is like Mecca for quattro devotees. These days, it's constantly filled with savage R8s, S8s, and RS7s. However, we spotted a little gem that's down to earth.

It's a brand new 2017 model year S3 with a 3-door body. It's expensive for a compact hatchback plus the owner decided to order it custom-made and wait several months for the delivery to happen.

From what we've seen, 3-door hot hatchbacks are a lot more popular with SEAT Leon buyers, but those are penny-pinching performance junkies anyway. There are a number of features you can have on the 2017 S3 that are missing on the Cupra.

For example, Audi now uses a 7-speed DSG-style gearbox instead of the 6-speed. This makes it better for motorway cruising and general comfort. The interior is obviously a lot more upmarket too, especially now that you can order the Virtual Cockpit. However, we're most impressed with the outer shell.

Neckarsulm will undoubtedly correct us if we're wrong, but this looks like 2D8, otherwise known as Porsche green. The hatchback also features the 5-spoke wing design alloy wheels, the Titanium look package, and the red brake calipers.

Editor's note: I can't really tell if 2D8 is different to Viper Green (another Audi green), but both look about the same and are almost always connected to Porsche when you Google them. 2D8 was very popular on the last R8 and TT RS.
