Just like Audi and BMW, Mercedes firmly believes in the power of the SUV. As such a whole range of models is being planned, stretching from the recently introduced GLA to a coupe version of the ML and even a replacement for the famous square-shaped G-Class.
Today, we're turning our attention to the second generation of the GLK, also under development. This compact premium SUV is hardly a legendary model, but many people have said it offers everything they need in a car, so sales have actually been quite good. Now, in order to compete with the X3 and Q5, Mercedes is working on an all-new generation.

This prototype was seen and filmed by our friend DrGumo on the streets of Stuttgart as it was undergoing regular road testing. Heavy camouflage and the standardized round taillights indicate the GLK Mk2 is at least a year away from entering production, but we have a couple of details about it already.

Its codename, X205, is our first clue. The GLK is going to be based on the same platform as the brand new C-Class, already considered a benchmark in the compact executive sedan class. This means that not only are we looking at a bigger SUV with a longer wheelbase, but a lighter one as well.

Engine choices will be shared, which means the X205 will for the first time offer highly competitive petrol units, including the new twin-turbo 3-liter V6 with 333 hp that will wear the GLK 400 badge. Diesel options should revolve around the 2.1-liter four-cylinder, with outputs ranging from 136 hp (GLK 200) to 204 hp (GLK 250 Bluetec).

There should also be a hybrid coming further down the line in the form of the GLK 300 BlueTec Hybrid, which will mix a 204 hp diesel with a 27 hp electric motor.

Given the state of development we see with this prototype, the X205 GLK might debut next year, during the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, where most German car companies like to present their important models.
