SUV shapes usually make it more difficult for a vehicle to please the eye, but this is not the case with the new Ford Explorer. Then again, even though this likes to pass as an SUV, it isn’t actually one.
Instead, we are dealing with a CUV here - Ford took the logical decision, following the market demands for better roadholding and superior comfort. As for the SUV appearance, this went all too well with the Explorer name in order for the Blue Oval to split the two.

The door closes with a nice solid feel, one that can easily be used to describe the entire cabin of the Explorer. This is a truly cozy place, turning the car into a good friend when long trips take place.

Still, the spacious interior could go even further down this road if the various elements, such as the seats and the dashboard, would be redesigned to offer the same comfort while taking up less space. Many brands, from budget ones to names like Bentley, go though such a phase and it would be time for Ford to apply this.

Don’t get us wrong, like we said, the Explorer is seriously roomy. In fact, this comes with a 5+2 seating arrangement - in case you’re wondering, access to the third row is facile, but the seating comfort itself is mediocre, due to the usual issue of the layout, a high floor.

We’ve swallowed quite some highway miles and the Explorer has stuck to its comfortable nature. Yes, this car is perfectly suitable for family use. As for family fun, we’re not quite sure.

We’ll stick to the driving experience for now and tell you that this is rather vague. Even when it comes to spicy editions, the Explorer Sport, with its twin-turbo V6, could learn a thing or two from the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT.

As for the parts where we ran out of road, we’ll go though this in our 2014 Ford Explorer review. We promise.
