Euro NCAP has just released a new batch of 2016 safety ratings and we're here to focus on the new Toyota Hilux. As you've noticed in the title, the workhorse's result vary dramatically depending on whether the optional safety pack is fitted or not.
Before we move any further, we have to mention the Hilux was tested using the safety body's Dual Rating system. To be more precise, the default rating relies on the safety features offered as standard throughout the range. Extra crash tests are completed with the optional safety pack, hence the two sets of results.

In standard form, the Hilux gets a three-star rating, with an 85 percent protection score for adult occupants, 82 percent for child occupants, 73 percent for pedestrians and just 25 percent for the safety assist technologies.

Once the optional Safety Pack is fitted, the protection score increases to 93 percent for adult occupants, remains unchanged for child occupants, grows to 83 percent for pedestrians and jumps to 63 percent when it comes to the active safety assist area.

The fact that Toyota are making advanced safety technologies available on pickups, even if only an option at this stage, shows that the Dual Rating scheme is a great way to encourage broader fitment of these systems across all types of vehicles,” Euro NCAP Secretary General, Michiel van Ratingen, said.

Since most of the difference comes from the active safety tech area, with adult and pedestrian protection being just slightly improved between the three- and the five-star ratings, we need to take a look at the contents of the said safety package.

We're talking about a set of features grouped under the Toyota Sixth Sense label. These include lane departure warning and a camera-based speed assistance system that includes limits for both normal and hazardous driving conditions, such as rain, showing them to the one behind the wheel. The pack also includes an autonomous emergency braking system with city and highway features.
