After its burnout smoke-laden and extremely loud stage entrance at the Detroit Auto Show, the Blue Oval’s newest track machine is slowly but steadily undressed by its high-octane secrets by the muscle car community. Latest reports citing insider intel tell that the 2016 Shelby GT350R Mustang is 2 things:
- $69,995 (base price);

- as fast as 7:32.19 around the Nurburgring.

According to the peeps from HorsepowerKings, the Shelby-ified ‘Stang in GT350R format managed to do this amazing lap time back in September 2014, a timeframe when the muscle car was still in full R&D swing. How does that 7:32.19 lap around the ‘Ring stack up against the closest vehicles to that margin?

After peering through the top 100 Nurburgring lap times list for production vehicles, the 2015 Shelby GT350R Mustang’s purported 7:32.19 is almost as good as the 7:32.00 pulled off by a Porsche 911 Turbo S in 2010 and a tad better than the 997-gen Porsche 911 GT3 RS’ 7:33.00 lap time from 2010.

Compared to main rival 2015 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 (7:37.47), the GT350R obliterates the track-bred ‘Maro into oblivion. Keep in mind though it was not specified whether the GT350R was equipped with the R Package for extra get-up-and-go. Still, fingers crossed the previously mentioned publication’s intel will mirror that of Ford’s soon-to-be-released official lap time.

In terms of pricing, the $69,995 purported MSRP of the 2016 Shelby GT350R Mustang is also a big plus over the aging 2015 Camaro Z/28. Whereas Chevy’s track machine is $72,305 excluding destination and so forth, the GT350R is $2,310 cheaper, which can be only described as good value for money. More so when you consider the flat-plane crankshaft Voodoo 5.2-liter V8 is expected to make “more than 500 HP.”
