UPDATE: We've been asked to take all of the renderings down from our website. It seems they are being systematically removed from everywhere they were posted yesterday. We apologize for the inconvenience and offer spy images of the 2016 Sportage instead.
Are these official photos of the 2016 Kia Sportage, leaked before its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show? We don't think so, and the "3D SQUIR" license plates are a dead giveaway.
What we're actually looking at is a 3D model that could be based on the real deal, but might also be created by a talented artist from scratch. Regardless, there is a website where you can spin the SUV and look at it from every angle.
Many of the details are 100% accurate, such as the headlights and quad daytime running lights. However, Kia is going for a more discrete "floating" grille without so much chrome.
Already, people are calling the 2016 Sportage a fake Porsche Cayenne from Korea. We can kind of see where they are coming from, but there's a bit of Mercedes-Benz in those wide-set taillights.
Like the Optima, there will be two different versions, the MX (Modern Extrem) and the SX (Sport Extreme, pictured here). A high-performance model will also be introduced, and it will pack a 245 horsepower 2-liter turbo mated to a 6-speed automatic.
Most of the other engines will be shared with the Optima, including the 1.7-liter diesel and 1.6-liter turbo. In both cases, a new twin-clutch gearbox will take care of the power delivery.
Besides being a sharp dresser, the new Sportage will also handle better, thanks to a wider track and a heavily revised suspension system. Hopefully, keener drivers will also get the responsive steering system they have been demanding for decades.
