Fiat has released the first details about its newest workhorse - the 2016 Fiat Talento. Slotted just under the Ducato full-size van, the Talento shares its underpinnings with the Renault Trafic, Opel Vivaro, and Nissan NV300.
The light commercial vehicle from Fiat Professional will be offered in a generous range of configurations, from flat bed to crew cab to people carrier to panel van. The Italian automaker is adamant that the Talento is ideal for “professionals on city streets and major roads alike thanks to its great versatility and ability to adapt to the most diverse needs of its customers.”
This is not the first time Fiat designated its light commercial vehicle the Talento. Before the Scudo came around, Fiat built a short wheelbase model based on the Ducato, which was also christened the Talento. Its name originates from the Latin talentum and the Ancient Greek talanton, one of the most popular units of mass used before and after the birth of Christ.
When it goes on sale in Europe in May, the 2016 Fiat Talento will be available with a choice of oil-burning engines. More specifically, a 1,598 cc four-cylinder turbo or twin-turbo diesel, with a range-topping output of 145 horsepower. A 6-speed manual transmission will be offered as standard.
The 2016 Fiat Talento, which is positioned between the Doblo Cargo and the Ducato, differs from its Renault-, Opel-, and Nissan-branded half-brothers from a stylistic point of view. The front grille is the biggest difference, along with the shape of the fog light housings and the daytime running lights.
Standard features for the most spartan trim level will come in the form of electronic stability control with Extended Grip and Hill Start Assist, cruise control, three seats (with manual adjustments for the driver’s seat), two sliding doors for easier access, and up to 5.2 cubic meters (183.6 cubic feet) of load space. The Fiat Talento with the long wheelbase will maximize the load length from 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) to 2.9 meters (9.5 feet). The optional load-through bulkhead ups the ante to 4.1 meters (13.4 feet).
