2016 Chevrolet Malibu Promises Corvette Styling, We Don’t Buy It

General Motors global design head Ed Welburn is that man that recently declared to the media “As [the next-gen] Malibu and Cruze and Volt come to market, you'll be able to see a subtle link between some of the form vocabulary for all of them and Corvette.” Ed has recently talked to Edmunds and guess what - he’s really really adamant about that, but totally wrong.
I kid you not, the man told the publication: “when you look at the Malibu's taillamps you can see a hint of Corvette Stingray... You see it in the form vocabulary in the body side. It has flare. It has spirit. It has tension... You won't see commodity Chevrolets. They will have spirit and energy." Aaa, weren’t we promised the same things with the all-new 2016 Chevrolet Volt PHEV?

It’s a purely subjective point of view this, but the front fascia design of the second-gen Volt looks like a dog’s breakfast. Not even the shape of the upper or lower front grilles resemble that of the C7 which we tested in Z51 format. You won’t find any seventh-gen Corvette cues at the rear either.

GM exec VP of global product development Mark Reuss also declared about the upcoming Malibu that you’re “going to be blown away styling-wise.” Try not to roll on the floor laughing. To wax lyrical about an upcoming product after GM didn’t keep its promise with the C7 styling of the Volt is not exactly OK. A mid-size family sedan from a volume automaker won't be something to be blown away styling-wise.

Despite all of these design shenanigans with great pomp and circumstance, the 2016 Chevy Malibu promises to be a pretty good four-door sedan. We know it will share its FWD / AWD E2XX platform with the 2016 Opel Insignia and the 2017 Buick Regal, while rear end design harks back to the fastback-like shape of the Audi A7 luxobarge. As for a potential public debut date, look forward to late 2015 because the 2016 Malibu was teased next to the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro last week at the Detroit Auto Show.
