When the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro debuted in May in Detroit Motor City, the most surprising aspect of the Gen 6 was not the Bumblebee styling cues, nor the adoption of the 8-speed automatic from the C7 Corvette. It was the LT1 small-block V8, an engine that screams brute force from every cylinder.
Though the LS3 will be missed, the Gen 5 small-block V8 is better in every way imaginable. In the 2016 Chevy Camaro’s case, we’ve only heard it a couple of times to date through official channels. But with the adjacent video, we now know how the belly of the beast sounds when it’s revved. In real life conditions, the Camaro’s LT1 is a fire-spitting behemoth.
In the video below, we’re treated with three blips of the loud pedal followed by a long howl. Despite the smartphone cam quality of the clip, the sound is what we’re interested and, in a nutshell, it’s 100% worthy of the Camaro and SS badges. But wait a sec, why does this SS have only 2 exhaust tips?
Isn’t the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS coming as standard with four exhaust outlets? Yes, it does, but only if you pay an extra for the dual-mode exhaust system. If you see an SS with just two tips, you can bet a tenner that it features the standard exhaust system. By opting for the dual-mode exhaust, Chevy enhances the sixth-gen Camaro with electronically controlled valves that bypass the mufflers under acceleration.
With all due respect to the Camaro engineering team, the SS with the normal exhaust system sounds badass enough in our book. Until we get to review the all-new Camaro breed, one can only imagine how the dual-mode exhaust will sound in “track” mode, harnessing the 455 HP (339 kW) and 455 lb-ft (617 Nm).
