In about 2 years from now, everyone will be talking about the F48 X1. Not necessarily because it will be brilliant or because it will be extremely well priced but rather because of its FWD architecture.
Yes, you read that acronym right, FWD, meaning FRONT-WHEEL-DRIVE. In case you’ve been living under a rock for the last 6 months, the internet is filled with rumors and suggestions about the UKL platform to which the X1 will be migrating.

The footage we posted below for your viewing pleasure confirms our suppositions, showing the prototype spinning its front wheels on more than one occasion. Another interesting detail you can observe is the size difference compared to the previous generation.

Fortunately for us, the F48 was caught right next to a contemporary model and we can get a pretty decent idea of how much bigger it will be. Even though the exterior measurements might not be hugely different, the new model seems more roomy and better balanced (from what we can make out at this moment).

Engines will most likely be part of the new B-family, ranging from 1.5-liter 3-cylinder units to 2-liter 4-cyl and even, possibly, 3-liter versions (keep your fingers crossed). Expect the new model in late 2015, early 2016.
