Volkswagen UK has announced official pricing information for a new model called the Polo BlueMotion TSI. This is a fuel-sipper model equipped with a 3-cylinder turbo engine that will retail for the somewhat steep price of £14,730.
Cosmetically, the BlueMotion is only slightly different from the rest of the range. It has a blocked off grille, skinny tires and small wheels. The real magic happens in the engine compartment. This is the fist time Volkswagen has built a BlueMotion model with a TSI petrol engine and it shows where the market is going.
Diesel has become much more expensive and in the city, where trips are short and the engines don't have enough time to worm up, a TSI could be better than the TDI equivalent. Paris is banning diesels and London could follow soon.
But enough of politics, let's talk about the specs. The Polo BlueMotion TSI packs a new 1-liter turbo engine that produces 95 PS and 160 Nm (118 lb-ft) of torque. It's connected to a five-speed gearbox and will take the Polo from 0 to 62 mph in 10.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 119 mph (192 km/h). In terms of fuel economy, VW says you can expect 68.9 mpg…. combined.
That's amazing, but what's even more amazing is that you can also get a diesel BlueMotion model that's even better at sipping fuel. Thanks to a new 1.4-liter TDI mill, the Polo can consume just 91.1 mpg combined. Who needs a hybrid? The downside is that the 1.4 TDI makes just 75 PS and is more expensive to buy at £15,795.
Both models get a Think Blue Trainer, which gives hints and tips on how to drive in a more economical fashion by analyzing journey patterns. Standard kit is generous and includes a color touchscreen, SD card reader, DAB radio and USB and AUX-in connections, as well as a height-adjustable driver’s seat.
