2015 Opel Corsa Tested: the All-Rounder Supermini

With the E, Opel pushed the envelope with the Corsa further than ever before, but there are several elements that aren't worthy of the "all-new generation" label. These things aren't true deal breakers, but clamp down on the 2015 Opel Corsa E's true potential.
For starters, let us kick off with what's under the E's skin. Internally known as the SCCS, the GM Fiat Small platform is the backbone of the fifth-generation Corsa. What seems to be the problem here? Nothing much except for the age. To put it bluntly, the 2015 Opel Corsa is employing an updated variant of the SCCS utilized by the 2006 Opel Corsa (D).

By comparison, Renault and Mazda developed all-new architectures for the Clio and 2, whereas Opel AG couldn't. But hey, the updated VW Polo and all-new Skoda Fabia are underpinned by aging bolts as well.

As mentioned beforehand, this fact isn't a deal breaker for one very important reason: the 2015 Corsa is nippy and an enjoyable car to flick through city traffic. After all, this is what does matter in a B-segment supermini.

The moment you venture out of the city, your ears are split by the wind noise produced at typical highway speeds (130 km/h or 80 mph). The design of the side mirrors and windows' rubber seals are to blame for this annoying hindrance. On a more positive note, the exterior styling is cutesy and playful minus the rather too bland rear fascia and humdrum taillights.
