Based on the soon-to-be-phased-out Opel Astra J, the Cascada mid-size convertible entered production just two years ago. Available with a choice of 1.4, 1.6, and 2.0-liter engines, the Euro-spec Cascada was recently augmented with an all-new 2-liter “Whisper Diesel” oil burner, churning out 170 PS (125 kW / 167 HP).
Available from €30,500 in Germany, the Cascada with the Whisper Diesel 2.0 CDTI offers great value if you’re in the market for a front-wheel drive convertible. Opel is saying that the 2.0 CDTI lump is similar to the one that was recently introduced on the Insignia and Zafira MPV. Mated to a six-speed manual transmission, the 2-liter turbo diesel is 3 percent more powerful and 14 percent torquier than the older 2.0 CDTI ecoFLEX.
In terms of torque, the 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) correlate to a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) stint of 10.3 seconds, as well as a top end of 218 km/h (135 mph). An impressive aspect is how this bucket of bolts shifts from 80 to 120 km/h (50 to 75 mph) in 10.3 seconds, which is seven-tenths quicker compared to the old unit. On paper, the Euro 6-compliant turbo diesel is said to return 4.9 l/100 km (57.6 UK mpg).
Though a diesel engine isn’t necessarily fitting for a drop-top vehicle, most Cascada buyers in Europe opt for the diesel power. Based on demand, the decision to get the Whisper Diesel under the hood of the Opel Cascada is well founded. The powerplant will be added to the lineup of the UK-only Vauxhall Cascada.
“The Opel Cascada is a mid-size cabriolet with premium features and quality for an extremely attractive price. With the new engine that is part of our extensive powertrain offensive, cabriolet fans now get an engine that sets standards in this class in terms of refinement, power development and consumption,” declared Peter Christian Küspert, vice president of Opel AG’s sales and aftersales department.
For 2015, the Opel and Vauxhall Cascada are further enhanced with the addition of three exterior paint jobs: True Blue, Rocky Coast and Coconut. Further details on the 2-liter CDTI Whisper Diesel can be found below.
