Earlier this week, Mercedes-Benz announced the introduction of a brand new nine-speed automatic transmission. While the new fuel consumption reducing gearbox will make its European debut in the E350 BlueTec, its seems that the US market has to wait a while longer.
According to Edmunds, quoting an anonymous company insider, the new 9G-Tronic will become available over the Pond in the second half of 2014, when the 2015 model year CLS-Class will go on sale. The source added that the CLS will have the nine-speed “in at least one engine combination”.
The new nine-speed automatic is expected to provide better fuel economy in the CLS, but estimates are not available at the time of writing. According to Mercedes-Benz, the E350 BlueTec fitted with the 9G-Tronic will return 44.3 mpg combined, compared to the 42.8 mpg delivered by the same model with the seven-speed transmission.
