Just the other day Chrysler announced that the Ram 3500 with the 6.7-liter Cummins diesel can tow a best-in-class 30,000 lbs using the SAE J2807 testing protocol. However, the mid-cycle refresh of the Ford Super Duty F-450 truck trumps that by 1,200 pounds.
That's a bit of a difference that'll likely have a great impact on potential buyers. To put those 31,200 lbs into perspective, just think about that the 2015 Ford F-450 can tow more than the weight of two full-grown male African elephants. Compare that towing capacity with the outgoing model's 24,700 lbs maximum towing capacity and you get a whopping 6,500-pound difference between the two.

As if that wasn't enough, the next-gen Ford Super Duty lineup will most likely adopt the tough yet lightweight aluminum construction first showcased on the 2015 Ford F-150 light-duty pickup truck, so imagine what's in store for you in a few years' time. But 'til then, let's talk some more about the mildly refreshed king of the Ford Super Duty hill. The new F-450 will go on sale this week, while the 2015 Ford F-250 and F-350 have been on sale for a little under 2 months now.

To promote its new heavy-duty truck, the Blue Oval is prepping a suite of TV ads. The first of the lot will feature comedian-pitchman Denis Leary and will start airing concomitantly with the kickoff of the college football season at the end of August. The other commercial is said to focus on the powerhouse that powers the blue-collar workhorse. Under the hood of the 2015 Ford Super Duty series you'll find a 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbo diesel with 440 horsepower and 860 lb-ft of torque on tap, a 40 hp and 60 lb-ft difference over the 2014 model lineup.

But does the claimed 31,200-pound towing capacity of the 2015 Ford F-450 meet the SAE J2807 standardized rating system? According to a Blue Oval official, the mid-cycle refresh of the heavy-duty pickup truck has undergone similar testing procedures to the towing standard developed by the SAE, so it seems like that figure is right on the money, stealing the Ram 3500's best-in-class crown.

Some of the updates that made the new F-450 able to tow more come in the form of a beefed up drivetrain, a larger rear axle and better designed towing accessories. It seems like Ford is increasingly careful with its "Built Tough" philosophy and frequent towers will certainly appreciate this.
