The recently-unveiled 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class W205 will start sales with three engines in Europe and two of them in the United States, but they represent just the beginning of an ever-expanding family of powerplants.
One of the most awaited and by far the most economical variants will be a plug-in hybrid version of the new C-Class, which will be the first of its kind in its segment and will apparently be launched later this year.
Just like the upcoming Mercedes-Benz S 500 Plug-in Hybrid, the most fuel efficient C-Class in history will use an internal combustion engine paired with an electric motor – as in any other hybrid – but the special bit is the fact that its battery will also be chargeable from an outside source, such as an electrical outlet.
There aren't any technical details about the new models so far, but looking at it bigger brother we are expecting a version of the M270 turbocharged gasoline engine paired with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery.
Together, the two power sources should offer around 250 hp and 500+ Nm (369+ lb ft) of torque, or more than enough for an under six seconds 0-100 km/h (62 mph) time and a combined fuel consumption of under three liters per 100 km (78.4 mpg). Stay tuned for more details about the model in the upcoming months.
