Just as Volkswagen announces it has plans to become top dog in the automotive industry, the Detroit Auto Show begins and we get to check out what might be the solution to "the American problem".
" What's the American?" you might ask. VW sales are down in the US, despite the overall market hitting post crisis highs. The Passat or Jetta aren't good enough for customers there, but this might be. Everybody knows that some Americans like SUVs and others like crossovers. This is a little bit of both.

The Beetle Dune Concept was revealed today in Detroit to great reviews. Based on the Beetle coupe, it gets the rugged softroader look of an Audi allroad quattro. Stand-out features include 19-inch wheels and 50 mm raised suspension. The Beetle Dune’s track has also been increased by 29 mm, to 1,607 mm at the front and 1,573 mm at the rear.  The five-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels wear 255mm of stick grip.

The front has also received some restyling, with a large center air intake that has a hint of Passat Alltrack and updated headlights. On either side, trapezoidal inserts house large semi-circular LEd fog lights.

Interior changes are limited, but a newer infotainment screen has been added and colors have been suited to the exterior.

Is Volkswagen going to build this? Let's hope so, because we're willing to bet folks are going to buy it.
