Chrysler has announced that its Ram Truck brand began shipping 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel pickup trucks from the Warren Truck Assembly Plant in Michigan to dealers across the United States. The diesel-powered vehicles are expected to arrive in showrooms over the next eight days.
Dealers were allowed to begin placing orders for the new pickup truck starting February 7 and, three days later, Chrysler reported that it had received more than 8,000 orders, which represents nearly half of the truck’s monthly production and about five times the normal percentage of sold orders for a prelaunch vehicle.

The 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is the first diesel-powered light duty truck to be offered in the United States. The model is powered by a 3.0-liter V6 oil burner that generates 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque and can tow up to 9,200 pounds.

The EcoDiesel comes with an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 28 miles per gallon on the highway and 23 miles per gallon combined, making it the most efficient truck available in North America.

In fact, the new 28 mpg rating is EPA’s best highway-cycle result ever achieved by a full-size, half-ton truck and surpasses the best mpg rating delivered by the smaller, compact trucks - the 2014 Toyota Tacoma returns up to 25 mpg when fitted with a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine.

With Ford and GM not planning to introduce a diesel anytime soon, the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is likely to remain the market’s sole oil burner truck until late 2015, when the next-generation Nissan Titan will show up with a Cummins mill.

The 2014 Ram EcoDiesel is priced from $30,465, including destination and handling fees.
