German automaker Porsche has unveiled the 2014 911 RSR racecar which will compete in this year's World Endurance Championship.
According to Porsche, the new 911 RSR "is characterized by consequent lightweight design and sophisticated aerodynamics" thanks to a variety of new carbon fiber components. Weight-saving measure were taken even further with the use of polycarbonate windows and a lithium-ion battery, the latter sourced from the Porsche Carrera GT road-legal vehicles.
The 2014 911 RSR is powered by the same 460 HP 4.0-liter six-cylinder boxer engine, but all that muscle is put on the track through a new paddle shifter-operated lightweight six-speed sequential transmission. The new Stuttgart racer also gained the seventh-generation 911's 10-centimeter longer wheelbase, a new wishbone front suspension, new air ducting and quick release systems for the front end, front lid and the rear panel.
Porsche will field two teams in the 2013 World Endurance Championship, driven by Marc Lieb, Richard Lietz and Romain Dumas, and Joerg Bergmeister, Patrick Long and Timo Bernhard respectively.
