Things are getting hotter in Jerez, Spain, as this weekend brings the debut of the series on European soil, and a home race for some of the most eager MotoGP riders: Jorge Lorenzo, Dani Pedrosa and Marc Marquez.
Dani Pedrosa managed to lead most of the Free Practice 1, but Yamaha's Lorenzo stole away his first position in the last-gasp lap and was only 3 thousandths of a second quicker. Lorenzo's team mate Rossi ended FP1 in the 3rd position, one third of a second slower than the Spaniard, and was followed by the Tech 3 Brit Cal Crutchlow, the fast and furious (and unfortunately overlooked) man at the COTA, and Marc Marquez. Hayden, Bradl, Bautista, Espargaro and Dovizioso completed the top 10.

The previous track record was set by Pedrosa in 2010, and now Lorenzo lowered it a bit, as he lapped 1m39s701, compared to Dani's 1m39s731.

Pramac Ducati decided there will be no substitute for Ben Spies, so Michele Pirro will only make his first wildcard appearance. Team Pramac Ducati issued a statement reading: "There will be no substitute rider for Ignite Pramac Racing Team racer Ben Spies, who stayed back home in Texas in order to undergo intensive treatment as he works to regain his physical fitness following the operation to his shoulder and the problem with his pectoral muscle, suffered during the last round, in Austin."

"I want to send my best wishes and good luck to the team for the race and also thank everyone who has sent me their best wishes for my recovery. I am doing my absolute best to get back to 100%, where I need to be, for the team and Ducati,” Spies added.
