General Motors and all of its sub-brands have constantly been in the news the past week, and it has manly to do with engines. Yesterday, it was announced that the Chevrolet Malibu midsize sedan will hit the market with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine next year, and it looks like it won’t be the only one.
GM must be glad they stuck it out with Opel right now, because their advanced small engine technologies must have payed off. Today, the engine range that will be available with the brand new Cadillac ATS sedan next year has been revealed.
The most important lump to be announced is a brand new 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four producing an estimated 270-horsepower and 260 lb-ft. of torque (353 Nm). Obviously, the engine is also significant because it’s going to send its power to the back wheels, or all four wheels eventually, if the rumors are to be believed.
If that sounds like a direct challenge to BMW, that’s because it is - Cadillac through everything they could at it, including the sink. The four-pot offers twin-scroll turbocharger with air-to-air intercooler, direct injection and even continuously variable valve timing.
“This engine is the perfect match for the new ATS, which will be a refined performance luxury sedan,” said Don Butler, Cadillac vice president of Global Marketing. “The 2.0T has an exceptionally smooth and responsive power curve that will make the ATS nimble, quick and fun to drive.”
“The 2.0T is one of the most advanced and efficient engines of its kind, and contributes to the ATS’s exceptional balance of performance and great fuel efficiency,” said Mike Anderson, chief engineer for the 2.0T engine. “It has the exhilarating, responsive power available when you want it, yet can provide the fuel efficiency that will make the ATS a fully competitive vehicle in global markets.”
In addition to the advanced new 2.0T, the ATS will also debut with a 2.5-liter base engine and a 3.5-liter V6.
