General Motors surprised the automotive press and its fans when it announced the Cadillac SRT was losing its 2.8-liter turbocharged V6 powerplant. This move seemed strange and inexplicable at first, as the mill provided near best-in-class power.
There is, however, method to GM’s madness as, according to a recent recent GM Inside News article, the 2012 SRX is getting a revised engine lineup. Engineering sources at the auto giant, as well as Cadillac dealerships, state that the familiar 3.6-liter V6 will be found under the bonnet of next year’s model.
The unit, currently found in the CTS sedan, will likely be tweaked to improve overall fuel efficiency when it makes its way under the SRX's hood. The mill currently produces an estimated 300 horsepower (223 kW) and 270 lb-ft (366 Nm) of torque when fitted to the sedan. It also features direct-injection, meaning that fuel is delivered directly to the combustion chamber to create a more complete burn of the air/fuel mixture.
A choice between two six-speed gearboxes could be offered, an Aisin manual or a Hydra-Matic 6L50 six-speed automatic. The automatic is the same one introduced on the Cadillac STS-V in 2005, and is designed to decrease engine rpm and improve fuel economy.
GM Inside News also reports that the SRX will get a few other tweaks for the 2012 model year, including a heated steering wheel. Cadillac fans should be glad to see the SRX getting the luxury features it should have come with since its introduction. The company is also reportedly working on a hybrid version of their SUV.
