The Cadillac SRX has managed to earn the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s top safety rating.
The process a car has to go through to receive a “Top Safety Pick” rating is not that simple. The vehicle must get a “Good” score for front, side, rear and the new rollover crash protection and come with ESP.
The Cadillac SRX has already passed the front, side and rear impact tests “cum laude”, and has now been awarded the “Good” rating for the rollover crash protection test.
“The Cadillac SRX, a midsize luxury SUV, earns the Institute's top safety designation after getting a good rating for rollover protection. The SRX had previously earned good ratings for front, side, and rear crash protection. TOP SAFETY PICK recognizes the vehicles that earn the highest ratings in all 4 Institute safety evaluations, and that have electronic stability control, which is standard on the SRX,” stated the press release.
The current standard for the rollover impact test requires a vehicle’s roof to be able to withstand 1.5 times its overall weight. The SRX managed to support 4.14 times its weight.
“Based on research of real-world crashes, the Institute evaluates rollover protection using a roof strength test. In this test a metal plate is pushed against one corner of a vehicle's roof at a constant speed. The maximum force sustained by the roof before 5 inches of crush is compared to the vehicle's weight to find the strength-to-weight ratio,” stated the press release.
The Cadillac SRX is the 15th midsize SUV to earn the top crash safety rating.
