2010 Mitsubishi Galant Recalled in the US

Japanese automaker Mitsubishi has just announced a new recall, this time considering the 2010 Galant vehicles which are apparently affected by a leaking fluid issue in the transmission system. According to a notification posted on the official website of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there are 2,307 affected vehicles.

"The automatic transmission oil cooler pipe assembly on some vehicles may have insufficient plating to prevent corrosion," the notification reads. "If the pipe should develop a hole due to corrosion, automatic transmission fluid leakage may occur. ATF in the presence of an ignition source may result in a potential fire hazard."

Just as expected, all fixes will be conducted free of charge, with the recall due to begin this month.

"Dealers will have the ATF oil cooler pipe assembly inspected. If insufficient plating is found during inspection, the dealer will replace the ATF oil cooler pipe assembly with new parts containing appropriate anti-corrosion plating," it is mentioned in the advisory. "This service will be performed free of charge."

Otherwise, the US market brought a 1 percent sales drop in February 2010. But even so, Mitsubishi officials are pleased and emphasized that these results are encouraging given the current difficult conditions of US' auto sector.

"The gain in sales for many of our models validates the tactics and programs we have implemented,” said Shinichi Kurihara, president and CEO of Mitsubishi Motors North America. "While February's severe weather affected showroom traffic in some of our key sales regions, we feel we have maintained a positive momentum."
