Twenty Percent of British Drivers Are Reluctant to Use the Highway Network

While other countries cry about not having enough highways to cope with the rapidly growing number of cars and the expanding economy, others are already starting to get bored of theirs.
Well, not so much bored as scared. It’s hard to imagine what would happen with the already crowded British highways if these 20 percent suddenly decided to face their fears, go up that ramp, and jump into that continuous stream of fast-moving cars.

Or at least that’s what they imagine they’ll find there - poor souls, it shows it’s been a long time since they last got on one of the country’s M roads. In reality, they most likely won’t “jump” into anything, but more like creep one car at a time, while the “stream of fast-moving cars” is nothing but a stagnant row of idling vehicles hiding their frustrated drivers.

And yet, the stats released by the RAC (Royal Automobile Club) show that 22 percent of all 38 million registered drivers in the country can rarely (if ever) be seen on the fast highways. Of these roughly eight million drivers, 380,000 admit to actively avoiding the highways out of safety fears or because they simply don’t feel capable of driving under those high-speed conditions.

This shouldn’t really come as a surprise, as a previous study showed that six million UK drivers doubt their driving skills altogether, with worrying numbers such as 28 percent of them admitting that parallel parking is a sort of black art for them, while 25 percent would rather circle the Earth instead of reversing into a parking lot.

As a side note, during the brief occasion I got to drive on the British motorways, I’ve seen more accidents than anywhere else, which led me to a daring conclusion: I think the Brits don’t really like driving on the left side either, they’re just in denial.

The RAC stats presented by The Daily Mail showed that a whopping 79 percent of those who don’t go on highways do so because they don’t feel the need to. That could be explained by two very simple facts: one, the United Kingdom only has 2,300 miles of highways, which isn’t that much, and two, it also happens to have some of the best driving roads in the world, so you’d have to be mad to opt for the highway drab instead of the chance to admire the beautiful scenery of the countryside.
