In the world of car collectors, one of the main criteria used to assess the value of a vehicle is its rarity. The rarer the product, the higher the price and the chances of it returning a profit in the future.
Naturally the rarest vehicles out there are one-offs, but most of the time these do not come with some element of historical importance attached to them. So the next place collectors look for money-making machines is in the world of special cars.

The 1978 Porsche sitting before you is exactly such a vehicle. It was put together by Porsche itself to compete in the D Production Class races of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), and it's one of just two such vehicles that were ever made. Back in the day Porsche made the two vehicles for racers Doc Bundy and Tom Brennan - the one you're looking at now was Brennan's, and has quite the history to it.

You see, as it often happens in racing, the Porsche managed to navigate racetrack safely until 1980, when it crashed at Road Atlanta. The damage was extensive and the car required a couple of years to get back on its four wheels. The work performed on it seems to have been a quality one, as it got back on the track in the SCCA, managing to win a couple of races in 1982.

After the D Production Class was scrapped by the organization, the Porsche was converted to SCCA GT3 specifications, where it raced until the 2000s.

The car now presents itself in pretty neat condition given the life it had. It packs a 1,986cc inline 4-cylinder engine under the body, modified of course, and running Weber carburetors and a 5-speed manual transmission.

Underneath the body the Porsche is equipped with specially-prepped suspension, a combination of Bremtec and Wilwood brakes, and a fuel cell. The entire build rests on BBS wheels.

The Porsche's exterior is wrapped in black and boasts racing livery, while the interior is mostly white and as spartan as you'd expect from a race car: protection bars everywhere, a single seat, and a special restraint system, among others.

So, rarity? Check. Experience in racing? Check. Fame? Of course, this 924 is the cover car for Porsche's D Production 924 booklet.

We found the vehicle as it awaits to be sold next week during a Mecum auction in Monterey, California. It goes complete with some of the trophies it won during its racing career, and racing logbooks from the 1980s.

How much for this incredible piece of racing history? Well, the owner hopes to fetch $200,000 for it, and that sum is likely to grow even higher as the car ages but doens't get old.
