As of August 18, the Rocketman biopic earned nearly five times as much money as it went into making it, so owners or curators of Elton John-related items must feel particularly inclined to sell their possessions to the highest bidder.
So must be the case with the current owners of a 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona, briefly owned decades ago by the English singer, who announced this week that they are selling it.

The car goes under the hammer at the Silverstone Auctions event at the Dallas Burston Polo Club in the UK in September as one of only 158 right-hand-drive Daytonas ever made.

Elton John purchased this particular car in 1973, and he held on to it until 1975 as one of its very first Ferraris. After he got rid of it, the car exchanged several owners, and two years ago was sold at another auction. The guy who purschased it then died in the meantime, so the car goes under the hammer again at the hands of his estate.

“Sir Elton John famously has a long affinity with Ferrari, having owned several range-topping V12 models that included a 365 BB, Testarossa and 512 TR over the years,” said in a statement Arwel Richards, Silverstone Auctions car specialist.

“It is believed this Daytona was his first Ferrari, buying it at the age of 26 in 1973 and keeping it until 1975, parked alongside his 1974 Ferrari 365 Berlinetta Boxer."

The car will sell complete with factory build sheets, order forms, Ferrari service cards, receipts, and every MOT certificate issued during its lifetime. As a side note, the odometer reads 82,000 miles (132,000 km).

Silverstone hopes to fetch between £425,000 and £475,000 for the car ($516,000 - $577,000). That's a tad less than the price asked for it two years ago.

The Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona is a two-seat grand tourer named so in honor of the Italian carmaker’s dominance of the Daytona 24 hour race back in late 1960s. A total of 1,284 units of it were made in the five years of production.
