1968 Shelby GT500KR Auctioned for Charity During ABC Reality Show

A car that is known as the "King of the Road" is to go under the hammer during a new reality TV pilot, hosted by Extreme Makeover Home Edition’s Ty Pennington. The car in question is a 1968 Shelby GT500KR, and part of the proceeds are to benefit the Carroll Shelby Foundation. The auction is scheduled to start on April 16, at 11 a.m. PDT., on The Queen Mary in Long Beach, California.

The restored 1968 Shelby GT500KR convertible reportedly has only 31,000 original miles on the odometer. This is one of 318 total GT500KRs built in the Highland Green and black interior color combination.

The Shelby features the original 428cc Super Cobra Jet engine rated at 335 hp. In addition, the car comes with an automatic transmission, air conditioning, an oil cooler, tilt wheel and AM/FM radio.

The car comes equipped with the period correct smog equipment, including the air cleaner snorkel that is rare on this type of vehicle. During its 1980s restoration, reproduction Shelby 10 spokes were added to the muscle car.

“Our team admires Ty Pennington and his approach to helping others,” said Jenni Shreeves, executive director of the Carroll Shelby Foundation. “Our mission is simple: to provide support to children and medical institutions battling life-threatening diseases and promote continuing education for today’s youth. We were excited when ABC and Heritage Auctions approached us about this special fundraiser. Not only will the Shelby’s new owner walk away with a legendary muscle car, but they’ll also help sick children receive the care and treatment they deserve.”

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to be offering the magnificent Shelby Mustang as part of this auction,”
said Greg Rohan, President of Heritage Auctions. “The advance buzz in the Shelby community has made it abundantly clear that this car is a gem and will be highly prized by its next owner.”
