0-60 MPH Is Not the Only Time Tesla Engineers Strive to Improve

For most of us, the speed with which our car's doors open or close is directly related to how much of in a hurry we are at that moment. Are you leaving for the dentist? They will open and close in the time required for you to make sure you miss the appointment.
Are you late for the start of the game? Good thing you like to work out as that door is going to feel the full wrath of your biceps. But it's not the same for Tesla Model X owners. Granted, they're not the only ones with electrically-activated doors, but they are definitely a minority surrounded by people who own Rolls-Royces and other extravagant wheels.

Whenever they were in a hurry, the only thing they could do was push the door-closing button more angrily. Of course, that didn't have any effect on the haste with which the door actually moved, but it was still better than nothing. So they pressed that button and watched in agony as those falcon doors performed their entire routine each and every time. Forgot your phone on the back seat and closed the door? Better hope nobody important calls because you're not going to try and get that until next morning when you leave again.

Last month, Tesla released one of its more important updates that affected all of its vehicles. Best known under the name "version 8.0," it mainly brought improvements to the Autopilot software, but other aspects of the cars were targetted as well. Most people will talk about the new user interface, but Model X owners had one more reason to rejoice.

They might have felt like time contracted a little the next morning after the update, as the door of their electric SUV opened up a lot faster than before. That's 1.5 seconds more quickly, to be exact, a difference you can easily spot in the video below. Closing time has been improved even more dramatically, with the 8.0 update shaving 2.2 seconds off the length of the total procedure. Isn't it funny how a car can accelerate to 60 mph faster than it can open or close its doors?
