The Ducati Multistrada 1000 DS was introduced in 2003 and criticized by Motorcyclist magazine that its seat was uncomfortable and felt like "a vinyl-covered sheet of plywood."

In 2005 Ducati released the new Multistrada 1000 DS, with a redesigned seat cover with soft padding and less angular shapes, and improved the mirrors with longer stems for better visibility.

The optional screen from the 2003-2004 model was used as standard on the 2005 model and improved the side stand that was too short on the previous models, making it easy for the bike to tip over by accident.

In 2005 there were two basic versions of the Multistrada, the 1000 DS and the 620, which also had a Dark entry model.

The 2005 Ducati Multistrada 1000S DS was fed with anger from the 992cc four-stroke air-cooled engine and spinning the rear wheel through a six-speed manual transmission with a force of 86 hp at 7,750 rpm and 88 Nm (65 lb-ft) of torque at 5,750 rpm.

For suspension, the 2005 model has a 43 mm Showa fully adjustable upside-down fork on the front side and a fully adjustable Ohlins shock absorber with progressive cantilever linkage handling the rear.

In the braking department, the model has two 320 mm discs with four-piston calipers on the front wheel and a 245 mm disc with a two-piston caliper on the back wheel.
