The concept of a personal luxury coupe was not new for Mercedes-Benz when it introduced the 2015 S-Class Coupe. Yet, it tried to compete with the luxury segment, exceeding the carmaker's premium status.

Two years after the model's introduction, the carmaker has decided to introduce an upgraded version. Usually, the German carmaker added a facelift four years after a model introduction, which was a sign that the sales were not going that well.

At the front, the car sported a new bumper and apron that offered a chrome-plated front splitter and wide air scoops. Moreover, the dynamic look was enhanced by new side skirts and chrome-plated twin exhaust trims with a V12 look. One of the most visible upgrades was at the back, where the taillamps received OLED technology. Each lamp featured 66 ultra-flat Organic LEDs that enhanced the car's rear look. As an option, the AMG line sported ten-spoke 20" light-alloy wheels.

Inside, the new dashboard featured two 12.3" displays, one for the instrument cluster and the other for the infotainment system. Since they were protected behind a common glass panel, they gave the sensation of a continuous display that covered three-quarters of the dash panel. In addition, a tall center console created individual spaces for the driver and the side passenger, which was extended to the rear. Thus, despite the big and wide stance, it was a four-seater.

Under the hood, Mercedes-Benz installed new powerplants to comply with the Euro6 emission standards. It introduced the 9G-Tronic (nine-speed) automatic transmission almost for the entire range. The AMG version, though, used the older seven-speed gearbox, which could withstand the higher torque of the performance-oriented powerplant.
