BMW changed its strategy and ditched the naturally aspirated engines for the top-performance version of the 5 Series, the 2011 M5.

While the E60 M5 was powered by a V10 engine, the 2011 F10 M5 switched to a smaller V8 but was more capable. But not only that, it was more powerful and comfortable on long roads thanks to its longer wheelbase and better suspension.

The sixth generation of the 5 Series came on the market in 2009, and it was a clear departure in terms of styling from its predecessor. Its smoother lines made it look more like a luxury car than a sporty sedan. But all those softened shapes were drastically changed on the M5 version. At the front, the bumper was lowered and featured three wide air intakes: one in the center for cooling the engine and two on the sides for the brakes. Moreover, the carmaker installed a pair of vents on the front fenders. At the back, the carmaker placed a quad-exhaust system.

Inside, the carmaker didn't forget that it was a luxurious vehicle built on top of a 7 Series platform. That helped it get enough room for four passengers, or even five if one could sit atop the transmission tunnel. Unlike the regular 5 Series, the M5 was fitted with a golf-club-shaped gear stick for the automatic transmission. Moreover, the M-badged steering wheel featured a pair of aluminum paddle shifters to help the driver manually change gears.

But the most important part of an M5 was under the hood. Here, a newly developed 4.4-liter V8 helped by a pair of turbochargers raised the power figures to 553 hp (560 PS) and sent them through a seven-speed automatic (dual-clutch) gearbox in all corners. The 2011 M5 was the first of its kind to offer an all-wheel drive transmission.
