Data available on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's website shows that the population of recalled vehicles in the United States has reached 37.5 million. That's almost 7 million vehicles more than the record set in 2004, when 30.8 million cars were recalled over various safety or non-compliance issues.
But there's a details that made us worry greatly. With six months still to go, we wonder how many more millions of cars will be called back by the end of the current year. Something tells us that the 40 million vehicle mark will be easily surpassed. Anyhow, out of those 37.5 million automobiles already recalled, about two thirds of the grand total is made up of cars built by General Motors.
Want another pretty dramatic fact? 8.1 million new cars were sold in the United States from January through June, translating to a four-and-a-half times difference compared to the vehicles considered unsafe or noncompliant by the bigwigs from the NHTSA. Here's another fact that will make you go 'wow': only 22 million cars were recalled last year in the United States, while the tally totaled 16.4 million automobiles back in 2012.
Compared to the Ford Motor Company's single-year 23.3 million recall record from 2001, the total population of General Motors vehicles called back from the beginning of the year to June surpassed 25.7 million vehicles. Except for the 30.8 million faulty U.S. vehicles record from 2004, there's been only one other year (1981) in which the recalled automobiles population has passed the 30 million mark.
