At the ongoing Frankfurt Motor Show, Peugeot is displaying not only the new 308 compact hatchback, but also a concept called the 308 R, which previews the most extreme version of the car they'd dare put on the road.
This test prototype, however, is the car in the middle, the 308 GTi. While the regular 308 range stops at about 150 hp, and the 308 R provides 270 hp, the GTi should have the same 200 hp as the smaller 208 GTi. This 1.6-liter engine was originally co-developed with MINI and in this application should deliver 275 Nm and will take the compact hatch from 0 to 100 km/h in just over 7 seconds.
Of course, most hot hatches in the compact segment use bigger 2-liter turbo engines, but Peugeot's approach has been to make models that are more competent than confident on the road. The 308 GTi will be characterized by its luxury fitting, its supple leather, customization options and easy of use on an everyday basis.
