Even though the vehicle made its global debut last month at the Geneva Motor Show, the reborn Swedish manufacturer Saab couldn’t leave the North American continent feeling alone and unwanted, so the Saab PhoeniX Concept was brought down for its debut there.
Packed with soon-to-be features that will go into the future Saab models (like the architecture that will be seen on the next generation 9-3) and new design lines, described as being “aeromotional” (the legacy of Saab aviation expertise comes to life in this concept), this is the perfect vehicle to show Americans what Saab is all about.
"The PhoeniX establishes a new reference point for the future of Saab product design," said Jason Castriota, Saab Automobile's Executive Design Director. "It symbolizes a renaissance of the innovative spirit and passion that drove Saab to build its first car. We're now taking the visual DNA forward with what we call 'aeromotional' design, adding emotion, power and fluidity. This design aesthetic will shape and differentiate future models in the Saab portfolio."
Designed by the company's star design talent, Jason Castriota, to showcase what the auto maker calls Aeromotional lines, the PhoeniX is a 2+2 seater meant to preview, if we are to trust the guys from Trollhattan, the next generation 9-3.
That sleek body hides a new hybrid powertrain, comprising of a 1.6-liter gasoline engine developing 200 hp and an electric motor that drives the rear axle. The two can be made to work in three different modes - Eco, Sport and Traction - each created to work in different conditions and to suite the driver’s mood.
The PhoeniX is the platform chosen by Saab to showcase its new IQon infotainment system concept, a technology based on Google’s Android operating system.
