Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles has just issued the first ever autonomous vehicle license to one of Google’s self-driving Prius. This is truly a large step towards the future of the automobile and our understanding of the ‘auto phenomenon’ is beginning to shift. Karl Benz’ brilliant idea has finally evolved and this is the next step.
Considering the fact that the license has been issued, it is quite clear that Google has ironed out all the bugs in the system and its perfectly safe. The car will be easily recognizable by its red number plate featuring an infinity symbol, which is unique to autonomous cars.
So, this is the first step. It has been taken. Now we need to brace ourselves and imagine ‘telling’ our car to take us to the supermarket or to work while you are watching a movie or enjoying a good book. This is the good part of the autonomous car philosophy, but it means people will be less and less interested in cars and driving them. Hopefully, not all manufacturers will adopt this technology in the future, so as we can choose whether to drive somewhere or be driven there by a semi-inteligent robot-car.
