Mitsubishi Will Release a Facelift for the Lancer This Year, New Model Still Not Happening

Not too long ago, Mitsubishi officials said that their efforts will be concentrated on developing new crossovers and SUVs as these seem to be the biggest sellers these days. That also meant that the development of sedans would be halted, Lancer included.
It seems like they didn’t change their mind and, instead of launching a new Lancer on the market, the Mitsu people are going to unveil a facelift. That’s right, a facelift for a car that is eight years old.

Speaking to Motoring, Mitsubishi Australia marketing boss Tony Principe said, “we have another facelift of the Lancer coming later this year." Even though he didn’t go into specifics, he did mention that this new take on the car will bring important changes to the table.

How important? That remains to be seen, but we are betting more on a visual upgrade than on a technical one. That would, of course, include the new Dynamic Shield design for the front end of the car, a detail first introduced on the 2016 Outlander.

Why isn’t Mitsubishi developing a new Lancer?

The main issue here is that Mitsubishi doesn’t actually have the funds to develop a new sedan that would then turn out to be a flop in sales based on how the market looks like today. The Japanese wanted to join forces with Renault and Nissan, but negotiations failed and left them all alone to deal with the development of new cars.

It’s a shame too as the Lancer was a really appreciated car that grew a distinct following in the tuning world. Back when it was launched, the latest iteration cause quite a stir but now, eight years later, it can no longer keep up with the rest of the pack.
