Mitsubishi has just revealed one of the world premieres to take place at the Tokyo Motor Show this month, the PX-MiEV. Just like its name suggests, the car is powered by Mitsubishi's Plug-in Hybrid System that returns a fuel economy of 50 km/l (around 2 l/100km or 117.6 mpg), if we trust the official figures provided by the Japanese carmaker.
Outside, the crossover-like concept features LED emitters in both the headlamps and rear lights, obviously aimed at reducing power consumption as much as possible. The body is colored in a newly-developed metal color providing a metal shell-like appearance, as the company said. Inside, the soft LED lighting is used on the instrument panel and door trim.
The electric motors are producing a maximum output of 80.5 horsepower and 200 Nm of torque and are capable of supporting a maximum range of over 50 km. The 1.6-liter DOHC MIVEC gasoline-powered engine releases 114 horsepower and 125 Nm of torque.
The PX-MiEV boasts several safety innovations, including Mitsubishi's new "Multi-around Monitor" that uses cameras mounted around the car to provide the driver a full panorama of the surrounding perimeter. Additionally, the car features a Driving Monitor System that monitors drivers' eye to determine the level of concentration. Every time the system detects that a decrease occurs, it produces visual and vibration warnings to the driver.
"The Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV uses a windshield that uses heat-reflecting glass to reduce the amount of heat energy passing through and uses IR- (infrared ray) blocking glass in the door windows. The body paint also incorporates heat-reflective and insulation technology," Mitsubishi explained one of the innovations of the car.
