Mercedes Starts GL-Class Production in Alabama
Dr. Wolfgang Bernhard: “Quality is our first priority. The team in Tuscaloosa is doing a great job in executing a flawless launch of the GL - just like last year with the M-Class. That puts us into a very good position for the important launches here in Tuscaloosa in the future.“
The new GL follows more elegant design than its predecessor. However, its proportions are largely the same - it’s 5,120mm (201 inches) long, 2,141mm (84 inches) wide and 1,849 mm (72 inches) tall.
There are three engines available with the 2013 Gl-CLass - the V6 GL350 BlueTec and two twin-turbo V8s - GL450 and GL550. The base GL350 offers 240 hp and 616Nm (455 pound-feet) of torque, the GL450 puts out 362hp and 549 Nm (406 lb-ft) and the top GL550 has 429 hp and 698 (516 lb-ft).
Mercedes Benz last year officially announced that it will invest some $350 million and create 400 jobs at its plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The plant is going to build the MLC coupe crossover starting with the 2014 model year and could also make the new CLA compact sedan, based on the MFA front-drive platform.
