The Initial D anime has had a great run since First Stage came out in 1998. Without it, Toyota would probably not have launched the GT 86. However, like all good things, it must come to an end. Manga (comic book) author Shuichi Shigeno finished the last of 48 volumes in 2013, marking the end of an epic 18-year run. It's now being followed up by an extremely short anime series, currently airing in Japan.
Initial D: Final Stage only features 4 acts, two of which have aired on May 16th, to be followed by two more on June 22nd. After never losing a race in his Toyota AE86, the hero of the story, Takumi Fujiwara, faces his greatest challenger ever, an opponent who also uses an AE86. Here's what we know:

In Act 1 "Natural" (the first episode), Takumi and Shinji start their race. Antagonist Shinji gains the lead, which leaves Takumi shocked at the sight of an opponent unlike any he's ever faced. In Act 2 "The Strongest Enemy", Shinji hums to himself to gain confidence. Feeling self-assured in his skills, the newcomer decides to put his hazards on and let Takumi pass.

Finally, in Act 3 "Dangerous Scent" Shinji overtakes Takumi at the last turn. He then jumps to action and responds with his trademark "blind attack" where the headlights are turned off. The opponent is left wondering where Takumi is, unable to see him in his rearview mirrors. But due to a mistake, the famous black and white AE86 blows its engine at 12,000 rpm. The race is won by the hero without power, as he crosses the finish line backwards.

The last episode titled "Project Dream" celebrates all past victories and races. Ryosuke Takahashi, the leader of team Red Suns, also reveals the meaning of the "D" in Project D, which stands for Dream. Takumi also makes a shock announcement: he's going to scrap the AE86.

With the end of the television anime series is near, we won't be saying goodbye to Initial D just yet. A new game called Initial D: Perfect Shift Online is coming out for the 3DS this year. Also, a feature movie called Legend 1: Awakening is scheduled to come out this August.
