Fiat Toro Unveils its Behind, Becomes World's First Modern Production Pick-Up With a Split Tailgate

The first picture of the production variant was released two months ago, but the Internet can now see the rear end of Fiat’s latest utilitarian vehicle, World Car Fans reports. The Toro features a split tailgate, an interesting feature in any segment. Currently, all the available competitors have a regular, one-piece tailgate.

For now, we don’t know if the new split tailgate can be opened in two different ways or if it only splits in two.

The RAM brand has already patented a two-way split tailgate for future models. Since the RAM brand belongs to the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles group, this feature might be found on the Toro.

The second picture of the new Fiat Toro also shows the name of a version, which appears to be called Volcano. Along with that name, we noticed that the tailgate also shows an “AT9” badge. This clearly means that the Toro will be available with a 9-speed automatic gearbox, which will be a unique feature in the pick-up segment.

Obviously, the vehicle shown is fully loaded. We noticed it features a set of unusual bars on the roof. They don’t show the typical rough look expected on a pick-up and they feature a third LED stoplight. Furthermore, the rear window doesn’t feature a protective grille. This is important for a work truck, which could carry heavy stuff in its bed and those objects could easily break the rear window if they’re not secured properly.

Fiat has already started producing and promoting the new Toro in Brazil. At first, the pick-up from Fiat will be available in South America. For now, the carmaker hasn’t detailed any plans for launching an international version of the Toro on other markets, such as Europe, China or North America.

The Fiat Toro isn’t the only pick-up showcased by a European carmaker in South America and not yet sold on the mainland, Renault’s Duster Oroch being in the same situation.
