With the S90, Volvo has proved that the XC90 was no fluke. For its part, the Swedish automaker proved that the money it got from Geely Automobile for research & development went on high-quality cars that have taken Volvo to a whole new level. But Volvo’s Chinese connection is deeper than it looks like at first glance.
After the start of production of the XC60 in China at the manufacturer’s Chengdu plant, Volvo then followed that up with the S60L, the long-wheelbase take on the soon-to-be-replaced S60. The latter also found its way to the U.S. Now, though, it seems that the not-yet-ready-for-production S90L will go down the S60L’s route: made in China, exported to the U.S. And EU.

But even though Xiaolin had announced plans to export the upcoming 2017 Volvo S90L during the Chengdu Auto Show, a Volvo spokesman from the manufacturer's Swedish HQ replied that “no decision has been made on S90 exports from China.”
For the second Volvo model slated to be exported from China, the biggest difference between it and the regular S90 built in Sweden is, of course, the rear legroom. In other areas, including the oily bits, the two won’t strike any sort of discordant note. The 2017 Volvo S90L will be made in at least one form: T6 AWD, the second most powerful option save for the T8 Twin Engine.
Like the name implies, T6 stands for the supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, 320 PS (316 hp) and all, mated to an 8-speed automatic. AWD is not that hard to decipher, alluding to the GKN-developed all-wheel-drive system that’s also present on the seven-seat XC90 SUV.
Speaking of the XC90, did you know that the old one soldiers on in China?
