BMW Targets Indian Luxury Motorcycle market

German manufacturer BMW has been quite successful in the luxury car market in India, so now it will try to squeeze in its two-wheeled offerings here as well. The manufacturer will first try and introduce a selection of the company's motorcycle range in the Indian market.

As BMW motorcycles range in displacement between 400cc to 1,300cc, the German company will first bring to customer attention its 1,200cc motorcycles as completely built units (CBUs).

“We are currently investigating whether its a good idea or not to enter the Indian market (for motorcycles). No final decision has been taken yet but the investigation would be over in the next couple of weeks,” Andreas Schaaf, president BMW India, stated on India's CNBC-TV18 via indiamag.in yesterday, September 21.

“Motarrads, our motorcycle company, is a core BMW group firm which sees a huge potential in India. We are very keen to enter India and an announcement will be made soon. We are studying the market right now,”
he added.

However, Schaaf did not mention plans of setting up an independent manufacturing base in India for producing motorcycles.

“India is a market that holds great potential for the future for us and is a building block in our global market offensive,”
BMW AG board member Frank-Peter Arndt said.

According to the local media, with prices ranging from Rs 10-15 lakh ($2,200 - $3,300), about 400-500 bikes are sold every year by a clutch of companies including Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda and the recently launched Harley Davidson.
