Jeep has officially unveiled the 2015 Renegade ahead of the vehicle’s public debut at the Geneva Motor Show this week. The Renegade’s design is no longer a mystery thanks to yesterday’s leaked photos, but time has come to take a closer look at Jeep’s brand new compact crossover.
Named after a concept shown in early 2008 and a package offered on the Wrangler from 1991 through 1994, the 2015 Jeep Renegade rides on a Fiat 4x4 platform and it’s the manufacturer’s smallest vehicle yet. Although the styling approach is mostly new, the Renegade is faithful to the Jeep heritage, wearing the trademark seven-slat grille and black surrounds for the round headlamps.
Although its overall boxy shape makes the Renegade look like a smaller Patriot from certain angles, most details suggest that Jeep designed the compact vehicle on a clean sheet of paper. Although small in size, the Renegade has the roughness and aggressiveness Jeep enthusiasts were expecting to see. It’s got flared arches, boxy shape, short rear overhang.
It might look weird due to its exaggerated features, maybe not quite appropriate for a car this size,, but we kinda like it. It’s a breath of fresh for Jeep and it’s certainly more appealing when compared to the 2014 Cherokee. And although it won’t hit the streets anytime soon, we do believe it’s the toughest vehicle in its class.
Things are bit different inside, where the Jeepish feel seems to have disappeared. Created using a new design language, called “Tek-Tonic”, the Renegade is nowhere near a Wrangler. It’s no longer rugged. It looks comfy and fancy enough for the 21st century, but it’s more a Fiat than a Jeep. But we’re not complaining. Customers who need a Wrangler should buy one. The Renegade has a different mission.
But don’t go thinking it’s a rococo city drive. Jeep designed its 101.2-inch wheelbase vehicle to be capable as well. Those interested to take their Renegade off-roading, Jeep will offer a trail rated Trailhawk 4x4 model with 20:1 crawl ratio Active Drive, a Selec-Terrain system with Rock mode, increased ride height, hill-descent, skid plates and many more.
Designed as a global vehicle, the 2015 Jeep Renegade will be offered with no less than 16 powertrain combinations that include four MultiAir gasoline engines and two MultiJet II diesel mills and a segment-first nine-speed automatic transmission. Details are limited right now, but it appears that the oil burners won’t make it to the US. America will only be getting the 1.4-liter MultiAir from the Fiat 500 (160 hp/184 lb-ft) and familiar 2.4-liter Tigershark (184 hp/177 lb-ft). The former one will be mated to a six-speed manual transmission, while the latter will come with a nine-speed automatic and optional all-wheel drive.
The 2015 Renegade will go on sale in four trim levels. Nothing new here, which means buyers will be able to choose from Sport, Latitude, Limited and Trailhawk. Pricing and availability has yet to be revealed, but we’ll be right back as soon as Jeep spills the beans.
