The 2014 Ford Fusion SE fitted with the company’s smaller turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder mill returns an estimated 23 miles per gallon in the city and 36 miles per gallon on the highway, the EPA revealed earlier this week.
This means the new 1.5-liter EcoBoost has the same fuel economy as the 1.6-liter unit it replaces, while having the same amount of power (178 HP) and slightly less torque (177 lb-ft). As far as we remember, Ford said the 1.5-liter will come with improved fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions. What happened Ford?
Speaking of which, the 1.6-liter can still be ordered with the 2014 Ford Fusion, but it can only be mated to a manual transmission for EPA-estimated fuel efficiency of 25 mpg city / 37 mpg highway / 29 mpg combined. Both powertrains will be available with stop/start technology.
The other two units that go into the 2014 Fusion are the entry-level 2.5-liter four cylinder (22/34/26 mpg) and the turbocharged 2.0-liter EcoBoost (22/33/26 mpg).
