2012 BMW 6-Series Getting AWD, All-LED Lights

BMW sure likes the teasing game when it comes to revealing everything about a new product. The Bavarian marketing teams usually reveal a car a few weeks before a major auto show, sometimes out of the blue - the way it should be, in our opinion. Not wanting to be outdone by the commutation from other German carmakers (think Audi), BMW is reportedly going to introduce all-wheel drive an the maker’s first all-LED headlights.

According to Motor Authority, BMW will introduce its first all-LED headlight system, available on both the coupe and convertible, starting from the start of production in July. Convertible models built before then wont come with this optional extra, but since LEDs are not to everyone’s taste we don’t think this is a problem from the sales point of view.

An all-wheel drive system will also be available starting in September in both the coupe and convertible, while the manual transmission, available in the 6-Series only in North America, will come sometime in summer as well. It’s interesting to see how BMWs are becoming more like Audis these days, on paper at least, seeing that the next 1-Series is expected to be a front-wheel drive car and the new M5 is also expected to arrive with AWD.

While some purists will argue the Bavarian Brand has lost some of its soul in the process, we will eventually get used to the idea of a 6-Series that sends its power to all four wheels, just like we did with the four-wheel drive Porsche 911 models.
