Feeling like you could do just fine adding one of the first 100 bikes Harley-Davidson to your collection? Good, because Mecum Auctions has just the right bike for you, provided you can attend the 20-21 March auction at South Point Casino and Exhibit Hall, Las Vegas… and have at least a million bucks (€895,000) or so to spend.
Mecum’s lot S62 is a most spectacular bike, a Harley-Davidson Strap Tank manufactured in 1907, one of the rarest and most coveted H-D machines in the world. According to the auction house, this 1907 model is one of the first 207 units built, and the 37th built that year. However, the even more important thing is that its #2037 serial number indicates that this is the 4th H-D motorcycle ever built, including prototypes.

Original paint for the best unrestored H-D Strap tank in the world

Mecum describes this 1907 as being “considered by many to be the best unrestored H-D Strap Tank example in the world”. The bike is sold with title and is probably as close to the original machine as it gets. The paint is original, as well as the leather seat and belt, and all the bits and pieces. Surely, if you would be so bold as to want to ride this piece of authentic motorcycle history, they would most likely not do and need replacement… which would kill the auction price of the bike.

The bike is well documented, and was bought at the Leo Bongers Estate Auction, in David City, Nebraska back in January 1993. It would have been interesting to know the price paid in ’93 for this Strap Tank and compare it to what Mecum expects to get for it this time.

This 1907 Harley-Davidson Strap Tank is part of a much larger auction which comprises a lot of retro bikes for all budgets. The E.J. Cole collection includes more than 220 motorcycles with production years 1903 through 1991. Among the main attractions of the auction we must mention an 1915 Cyclone Board Track Racer formerly owned by Steve McQueen, his 1907 Indian Single, 1942 Crocker Twin and his 1912 Minneapolis Single, plus a lot of other amazing motorcycles.
